Around the time that nu-metal and garage rock/post wave revivalists dominated alt-rock radio, these gems occasionally show up on the dial. The K.G.B. - "Lover Undercover" (2001) This SoCal group has a nice little laid back song with some ska horns and a bit of Smokey Robinson into it. Caviar - "Tangerine Speedo" (2000) This band from Chicago has a great song that was featured in the "Charlie's Angels" movie.  It starts off with a bit of exotica in the verse with a rocking chorus.  Anyway, is Mello Yello great when it's mixed with gin? From the mid-1990's to the early 2000's, alternative radio was the soundtrack to my younger years.  Here in San Diego, 91X is still the #1 alt.station for over 30 year, but now it is not relevant.  They still overplay Nirvana, Smashing Pumpkins, Bush, blink-182, No Doubt, Foo Fighters, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Muse, Stone Temple Pilots, Green Day, Weezer, Kings of Leon, Linkin Park, The Black Keys, Pearl Jam, etc. like it's used gum.  But they also play recent poppy crap like Kaleo, Twenty-One Pilots, Lorde, recent Coldplay, etc.  Either major radio markets play crap (like here in San Diego) or changed formats (like in Philadelphia, Dallas, and Chicago).
